What are Dental Implants

Dental implants are small titanium screw used to replace missing teeth. They act as permanent replacements for natural roots of teeth. When a Dental Implant is placed, a natural looking Porcelain Crown is designed to fit securely over the Dental Implant.

Dental implants resemble and function like a normal teeth. Ultimately the patient should not notice the difference between real teeth and the dental implants.

MINI IMPLANTS

Mini Implants can be ideal for replacing missing teeth or securing dentures. Mini Implants can be placed in a much shorter time than Conventional Dental Implants, typically in one visit. If you are in need of dental implants, but you are discouraged by the higher cost or waiting time, then Mini Implants are the solution.

BONE & SINUS GRAFTING

When teeth are not present in the mouth, the supporting jawbone around the teeth slowly dissolves away due to lack of exercise. This also occurs with some gum problems. The result is insufficient bone to support dental implants. Bone may be grown allowing implants to be placed later. Specially treated bone from a bone bank may be placed in the area where bone is deficient.

The added bone is left to integrate with the natural jawbone before implants are placed. Depending on the amount of bone being grown implants may be placed after four to nine months. Occasionally it may be necessary to wait a little longer.

Implants are left to become firmly attached to bone for a number of months before a denture or crown and bridgework is fitted to them.

SINUS LIFT

A sinus lift (or sinus augmentation) is surgery that adds bone to your upper jaw where there is not enough jaw bone to support Dental Implants. Additional (artificial or irradiated) bone is added between your jaw and the maxillary sinuses, which are on either side of your nose. To make room for the bone, the sinus membrane is moved upwards (or lifted). A sinus lift is usually performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or a dentist with a special interest in Dental Implants and Sinus / Bone Grafting.

WHO MAY NEED A SINUS LIFT?

  • Those who have lost their teeth in the upper jaw and require dental implants. (Dental implants require enough bone to support them). Because of the anatomy of the skull, the back of the upper jaw has less bone than the lower jaw.
  • Bone may have been lost because of periodontal (gum) disease.
  • Once teeth are gone the jaw bone begins to resorbe (absorb back into the body and therefore be of less quantity). If teeth have been missing for a long time, there often is not enough bone left to place implants.
  • The maxillary sinus may be too close to the upper jaw for dental implants to be placed. The shape and the size of this sinus varies among individuals. In addition, the sinus can get larger as you age.

NERVE REPOSITIONING

The nerves, which supplies feeling to the lower lip and front teeth, pass through the lower jaw on each side. The gum over lower jaw to be opened and bone will be removed to expose the nerve inside the jaw. The nerve to the lip will then be moved so that it comes out of the jaw further back in the mouth. The nerve to the front teeth is usually cut to permit this movement. A graft material is placed in the space where the nerve used to be. The gum is closed with stitches and an oral bandage is placed.
